Dear Friends and Valued Customers:
Out of all the types of nutrients being studied for their potential to promote and maintain good health, few have shown the promise of the essential fatty acids, particularly the omega 3s. Whether it's cardiovascular health, mental function, skin, joint or immune system health, the mountain of scientific evidence for the benefits of omega 3s keeps growing, study after study, and it looks like we've still only scratched the surface. Thus, it should come as no surprise that the omega 3s are taking center stage once again as they play starring roles in each of this week's reports.
Starting off, we'll look at the relationship between omega 3 fatty acids and metabolic syndrome, a term used to describe a group of cardiovascular risk factors including central obesity, low HDL, high blood pressure, high blood sugar and high triglycerides. In a recent research review published in the July 26 issue of Nutrients, Dr. Artemis Simopoulos of The Center for Genetics, Nutrition and Health examined the link between metabolic syndrome and changes in the Western diet, specifically decreases in omega 3 consumption and increases in fructose consumption. It appears that the dramatic increase in sugar consumption that accompanied the introduction of high fructose corn syrup into our food supply and insufficient dietary omega 3 intakes are both major culprits in what has become an epidemic of metabolic syndrome in the last few decades. Read my first report to learn more.
Next we have new research into the relationships between serum concentrations of specific fatty acids and the risk for stroke among post-menopausal women. A study comparing serum lipid levels of 964 stroke victims with those of healthy controls found that the omega 3 fatty acids DPA and DHA were both inversely associated with stroke risk, suggesting they may have a protective effect. My second report has more details.
Finally, we'll have a look at the potential for essential fatty acids to alleviate dry eye syndrome, a common problem in the elderly population. In a double blind, placebo controlled trial conducted on 38 postmenopausal women with tear dysfunction published in the July edition of Cornea, subjects receiving a supplement containing omega 3 fatty acids and the omega 6 gamma linoleic acid (GLA) showed significant improvement in symptoms compared to those receiving a placebo. Get more information in my last report.
As always, I wish you the very best of health.
